BEHIND THE PICK
What. A. Wait. But finally, Batch 7 of the anticipated Alaska Whisky Godfather (AWGF) series has finally landed. Yes, this release took significantly longer than planned, all thanks to the TTB. The Feds come knockin’ when you have Ylli in a room full of barrels cookin’ up blends of blends of blends.
You see, this wasn’t just any blend. It was a bold union of two phenomenal barrels of bourbon and rye. While working on the AWGF Anniversary blend #6, Ylli, obsessively always cookin’, started dabbling in barrels not originally meant for the project. He experimented, pulled samples, and tried combinations for what seemed like hours. Long, the numbers guy, shot most of his cuvees down, knowing they had other distilleries waiting to do picks with and they’ve already spent 3 hours on site. But something happened...
Ylli stumbled onto a combination, a blend that danced on the edge of brilliance. It was his own take on a BouRye, something J. Mattingly had never done, and it wasn’t just good… it was dangerous. Smoof, bold, perfectly balanced. A two-barrel blend that in whole was greater than the sum of it’s parts, a blend that really could go toe-to-toe with H**h W**t’s BouRye. Same-same, but different.
Long couldn’t ignore it either, it was a rollercoaster. The team took the measurements of the blend and vatted the barrels right away so the profile wouldn’t change. Essentially, to have it ready to be bottled that moment. A char #4 Kentucky Straight Bourbon (78c/10r/12mb) and MGP Straight Rye (95r/5mb) that were both spectacular by themselves, but the cuvee is a marriage in heaven. This was something special that showcased both casks symbiotically.
That’s when the boys from J. Mattingly told the ALCTD team there was a problem. The story about why the label reads as it does is a long one, ask anyone in the shop if you’re looking for the whole story. But after a lot of back and forth between J. Mattingly and the TTB, we got it done. Finally. Nothing worth doing is ever easy.
Batch 7 is here. RyeBou is here. If you’ve had whisky blends that are a part of AWGF’s series before, you know damn well these are the ultimate curated blends coming from ALCTD’s house. Enjoy.
